Blog writing subject dilemna

Hello. I had a little choice to make in the subjects I'm writing about. I have a niche blog about a subject I quite enjoy. However, the hits for this subject are not that high - getting on page 2, but the quality of the competition is quite high.
Surprisingly I made some other posts about another subject and this is getting a lot of hits. But the niche isn't really large enough to spin out to another blog. Also the quality of posts are lower, for the first subject I can easily write articles up to 1,000 words - the other subject which are more popular, I'm getting to about 200 words, that's it.
What is better to concentrate on?
