Ranking in country specific Google

I have a website with a .hu (Hungarian) domain name, its content is also Hungarian. It's ranking on page 1 for my keyword in google.com but not ranking at all in google.hu. What can be the reason? I'm thinking 3 things:

1. The site is hosted on a US server. According to google, it should not be a problem, but I'm not sure anymore.

2. The majority of the links are from .com domains and the language of these sites is English, not Hungarian.

3. My site has a lot less links than those in the google.hu seprs, but that just wouldn't explain why it's ranking well in google.com and not in google.hu.

So what do you think? Should I try to move the site to a Hungarian server or should I build more links from .hu domains or from websites written in Hungarian language? Or is there something else I'm missing?

Have you changed the country target in Webmaster Tools to Hungary? That's the NUMBER ONE thing to do - it's worked great for me recently: my .net which is hosted in the US and has mostly .com backlinks now ranks top ten in the UK and I am sure it is due to my changing the Geographic target in WT.

Make sure you have HU in your meta-language tag in the header too!

I think that should be enough to get you ranking in Google.hu, I would be interested to hear the results.

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

I have the same problem with leiden, but my case is targeted to Australian. I already set up google web master tool to targeted to Australia and still waiting for result, I think I don't need to setup meta tag since Australia web is in english.

Do you have another tips to get ranked in Australia?

Since the domain name is .hu, Webmaster Tool won't let me set a target country, it says, it's already targeting Hungary.

Thanks for the meta-language tip, I'll set it.

It is better for you to struggle for getting top rank by simple serp in Google instead of region wise. Unique traffic from all over the cyber world could also increase PR and Alexa Rank of your site.

The .hu domain, coupled with the fact your content is in Hungarian, should be sufficient as a signal to Google that your pages are relevant to a Hungarian audience. Backlinks from an appropriate source will further increase your relevance in the Hungarian SERPs.

This is probably the root of your ranking problems. Backlinks are a stronger vote/measure of relevance than anything else, as far as Google is concerned.

Work on acquiring links from sites utilising .hu domains and/or sites that are hosted in Hungary, sites whose content is written in Hungarian, or else sites that are prominent in the Hungarian SERPs (since Google obviously judges these as being relevant to that country).

You've essentially answered your own question, here.

The reason your Hungarian-language pages rank better in Google US is because there are unlikely to be many other competing pages written in Hungarian in Google's US SERPs that have the sufficient quantity/value of backlinks to push that content to the top.

How many Hungarian-language search-queries do you think originate from a country predominantly made up of English-speaking people, and how many English-language pages do you think are likely to be linking to non-English pages? Your site is in the minority, here, since most of your links are from English-language sites. But that's because you've been forcibly building those links yourself, in an unnatural way, with a view to manipulating the search-results. Your site would never have naturally amassed such a backlinking profile, just as the other sites (above which yours is ranking in Google US) clearly haven't.

I think you should get more relevant backlinks. This will push your site up higher in the appropriate (Hungarian) SERPs.
