Almost everybody saw screenshots with annotations i.e arrows, text, various effects etc. right? All this really helps in screenshots for tutorials/instructions. What i would like to know is what good free software can you recommend for making screenshots and annotations or just annotations.

    Hi Boris,

If you have a PC, not sure about how to do it with a Mac(never used one), but you can just use your Alt, Control and Print Screen Buttons.

Just hold the 3 of them down for a second(you won't see anything happening at this time.)

Now open up the Microsoft Paint program that comes with Windows.
(Your Paint program should be located in the Accessories part of your programs.)

Once you have the Paint program open, go up to the 'Edit' button and choose 'paste'.

You should then see the image of your screen there.

Now save it under the 'File" button.

Now you can use the Paint program to do some basic highlighting, circling and other basic functions right on the same page.

Hope this is part of what you were looking for.

There are other more complex programs you can buy, but by your post, it seems that this method would get you started until you know which tools you would need that the 'Paint" program doesn't offer.

My skills don't go too much further than this at this point but I'm sure other's would be glad to help with the rest of your questions.

    Good Luck!

    Joe

If you really to create mind blowing screenshot, combine quick screen capture software with the paint program in your computer.

capture the screenshot with the quick screen capture software, don't save yet, copy it to the paint program and create something really mind blowing then capture it again from the paint program with your quick screen capture and use it where you want.

I've been using it this way and it's been great so far

  • The best thing I know of (and the one I use) is a free Firefox add-on called Greenshot (see here: Greenshot - a free and open source screenshot tool for productivity).

When I am in a hurry for resizing and so forth, I use Greenshot in combination with Irfanview, which I already know well. But if I studied Greenshot a bit more than just basic stuff, I could probably use it all by itself just as quickly.

    It's a great little tool.

  • Just to be sure, I presumed that the question was about screenshot stills, not video.

    Maybe I misunderstood...

Mark_w -- That CollabShot looks cool. Greenshot works pretty much that way, except the editing program automatically pops up like a "pop-up" with the image in it after you select the area.

If some day I ever get disgusted with Greenshot (like, say with an update problem), it's good to know there is an alternative.
