I just did something funny and mean.. But I loved it!

My competitor was outranking me in the #1 spot and I couldn't figure out why, and as I did my research I found out that he had got a wikipedia link somehow.

So after about an hour I figured out how he got it, and I went into it and changed his domain to mine, and left the anchor text as he had it so he wouldn't notice.

Hopefully it goes good and doesn't notice and I start getting the juice the wikipedia link gives even though its nofollow!

I know it's pretty cruel, but seo is all fun and games.. it happens right?

    If you screwed with a Wikipedia link it will almost certainly be caught and changed back.

    There are hundreds of "recent changes patrollers", I am one of them and we look for every vandalism on wikipedia so your change will be soon reverted, if it didn't happen already.

      I hate you guys LOL! :p Even when I post great, unique, accurate, informative, non-duplicated information... One of you always calls out SPAM! Then you have to go through a ridiculous process to prove you are the domain owner and not using copyrighted material blah blah... And then you have a 50/50 if they decide to take it down or blackball you

        Well, yeah, there are a lot of crazy patrollers and mods there, sometimes I'm asking myself if they are doing anything else besides watching recent changes on Wikipedia.:p But I'm not like that, I log in once at 2-3 days and make some contribution and look for vandalism like people who delete whole pages or the ones who insert unrelated words inside articles. I also deleted a few links to websites full of adsense or other ads covering the whole page.

    But there is one more question for you over here and that is how you made sure just that single link was all about your competitor's better ranks than yours? Many times webmasters build links for their websites which are only viewable through Webmaster Tools Panel and even Yahoo Site Explorer might not display them quickly. The better approach to fixing your ranks is to build solid links in the course of time.

    Just forget about that single vote which I still have doubts if it was so powerful. Besides, by searching Google, you will find a ton of resources from which you can gain links like forums, blogs, directories, even paid links offered by companies.

        What?? You just finished literally tearing down someone elses link and you are lecturing Matt about him tearing you down? Disagree with him quite a bit on other things but on this he has you nailed. You have no future in SEO with that bush league approach.

        Frankly you don;t even understand how wikipedia works. Your link will almost surely deleted and you will be tossed to the curb.

          Just for the record I disagree with the tactic but your real mistake was telling people about it

    I have a way that will make a wiki link stick, & is actually encouraged by wiki.

    I was working on a new pdf of what I do, I'm a little hesitant now that I see a wiki Mod on here. Not that my tactic is in any way wrong (100% legit), just that when everyone knows about something on the net (seo), it tends to get stopped soon after.
