Backlinking to eZineArticles/eHow/etc...?

I've been analyzing what my competitors have been doing to rank high on Google, and I've found that they're typically using articles hosted on their website that are highly relevant to a specific search term. Then, they're backlinking all over the internet to that specific page with that specific keyword so that when someone searches that term it will rank super high on Google. I'm sure they've done this over a long period of time to have their actual domain ranking so high.

My domain is only about 1 month old so it will be a real chore to host articles on my website to rank high. But rather than do that, I was thinking about posting articles on eZineArticles and eHow, which already have a high page rank, and then backlinking to these articles around the internet. That way, I won't have to lift my site from the basement all the way up to page 1. And I'll get pretty much the same result.

A couple of questions for you guys who are experienced in SEO:

1. How many backlinks do I need to establish to do this? I know it's different for each search term. But ballpark... are we talking 15-20 links or 150-200 links? Remember, I'm backlinking to an already high page rank domain.

2. How long will this process take? I know that it would probably take months to build the rank of my domain, but someone told me that it might only take 1 month or so to rank eZineArticles or eHow articles high because they already have a boost from the domain's page rank.

3. Do you recommend building backlinks to the backlinks? I've heard that doing that makes sure that your page ranks high and stays high over the long term. But it would be an incredibly daunting task if I had to do that to over 150-200 links...

Ehow is not the same as EZA, you can't just go & post an article on Ehow.

If you don't get traffic from an article posted on a site you don't own (EZA), IMO your wasting your time. You could simply skip the article & create backlinks with anchor-text on billions of other external pages.

Why people post articles on sites like EZA never made any sense to me, that's just putting free money in EZAs own pockets. Forget that, put the money in your own pocket, post the article on your own site.

I always felt exactly the same. The real trick is to create your own EZA and get everyone to post on your site

I know exactly what you guys are saying. But the reason why I wanted to post on EZA is that I'm trying to sell a product -- an anti-anxiety herbal remedy. I figured that it would be a whole lot easier to rank that EZA article high up on page 1 quickly than it would be to rank my 1 month old domain. And since I don't have ads on my page or anything like that (I'm just selling the product), the traffic from the EZA article would be almost as valuable as the traffic from an article on my site that pumps my product and with only the fraction of the effort required. But maybe I'm wrong. Is the effort required to rank an EZA article equivalent to the effort required to rank an article on my page?

It would be a good idea if you have a link in your author bio on eza with anchor text to your site. Then link that article with exacly the same anchor
So you will get strong backlink to your site and the article may rank high itself and generate you some traffic (but this depends on keyword you are targeting).

JMO but if it were as easy as putting your article on an authority site and backlinking them the SERPs would be littered with their articles. They have a lot of "junk" on their pages as well. And I'm not to sure if backlinking them is as effective as before, late last year the backlinks at ezinearticles stopped showing up. Some links shows up in some backlink checkers, but not all. And one that supposedly checks Google showed zero links (most viewed section).

So i said it depends on keywords. For some keyword you can do exacly that (sometimes just post an article and it will be in top10). But I will always build most of my backlinks straight to my website.

The question was "Do you recommend building backlinks to the backlinks?" I assume he's refering to ezinearticles.

Not necessarily. It used to be the case that it was much easier to get an EZA article to rank, than the article on your own site. Not so much anymore - particularly since the recent Google update, where the Big G seems to have fallen out of love with EZA somewhat.

Never waste time building links to someone else's site - be it EZA, or another article directory, or a Web 2.0 site. Put the time and effort into your own site, and although it may take a little longer, it will be worth it in the long run.
