The goal is to have your site seen as an authoritive site on that niche, and have you need to have the most original content on your site. Quality will get you backlinks.

As an example, Youtube is an authority in the online video niche.

Now, that could be broke down to a sub-niche. Example, anyone could create a smaller sub-niche for vacation cruise videos, the entire site would be about vacation cruise videos & nothing else.

A sub-niche would stand a better chance in the SERPs, against a huge site like Youtube, since youtube videos are about anything & everything, unlike the vacation cruise videos niche which targets a smaller more exact traffic.

Niche sites are basically concerned with merely one and specific type of category, while authoritative sites are the sites that contains fully original material and offer links to other relevant sites that are of the same nature.

Authority sites are websites that people will bookmark, and go back for more information time by time. Authority sites can be very general sites, authority sites can also be niche sites.

The reason most authority sites are general sites is because you can pretty much cover ALOT of topics and provide a lot of different kinds of quality content to different markets, but that doesn't mean it's easier. Just imagine the amount of work you will need to do to write for a huge range of different topics.

You need to figure out what you want to accomplish with your site, and then create a site that accomplishes that.

If you want your site to focus on a very specific market, or a "niche" market, then make a site about that specific niche market. But put good content on it and it can be thought of as an authority in that niche.

The other option is to create a much larger site around a bigger or broader market. These are sites that are usually much larger.

      Example: Niche site - www(dot)2door1974RedBuicks.com
      Broad site - www(dot)usedcars.com

You can see the difference here. The first site is only going to be about 2 door red buicks from 1974. The second will be about all used cars.

Which is better? Depends. If you identify a good niche market, it's much easier to become an expert in that field. You could probably learn everything there is to know about those red buicks pretty quickly. Knowing about all used cars is a little more difficult.

      Nothing to see here
