Hey all,

Just wondering what is the best way to keep track of backlinks? Do you use software or a spreadsheet?

Use Google Webmaster tool and Yahoo site explorer to keep track of your backlinks. Keep in mind though that every backlink may not show up on these tools and it will take some time before your backlinks start appearing in them..

Same with backlinks: if you're working in (for example) a hotel, you can add a backlink very fast (because almost every pc has Excell installed). If you use a special program, you can't update it when you're not home..

I'm using it for many times, with great success!
Instead of excel, you can use google docs which is accessible anywhere there is internet. No need to install anything! Great for on the go

Using a spreadsheet is ok, but you can also track all of your backlinks so they are accessible with a click of a button by bookmarking them. My choice for bookmarking is delicious bookmarking.

I guess a spreadsheet would work for the building process but for actual tracking I want to see what is actually showing up in the SEs and hopefully there will be some I didn't explicitly build as well.

    Hi

I was wondering why u need to track it?

if the site only allows one time submission, then your next submission will fail. if the site allows multiple submission, then just submit it.

Yahoo doesn't include every link. It includes more than google webmaster, but it still has some holes.

It seems these tools have more than a few holes.

I have a site where I have a couple of Ezine articles, several other articles other directories like GoArticles and Squidoo. I have numerous bookmarks (including some sites that are supposed to have do follow links). I have profiles and postings on many forums. I have links built by BMR as well. I can go in and verify many of these links exist and verify that Google has in indexed them by searching for them. I have actually started to see improvements in my rankings (which is most important) on some of the keywords being used as anchor texts.

Then I go into webmaster tools and it shows one link to Ezine articles. Some of these links are a month old at this point. SEO SpyGlass showed 2 Ezine article links. Yahoo Explorer shows the two Ezine Article links, an Ezine profile link, and 1 domain registration link.

What gives? I would have thought that if Google indexed a posting or article it should show up in the webmaster tools but that is obviously not the case. I might suspect that some forums may take longer. But Squidoo and GoArticles? Some of these actually rank well and are providing traffic in their own right.

It is frustrating to know these links are out there and not have any tools report them.

Hello guys, I've checked the thread but I don't think that it answers my question. I make guest posts but I want to keep track of the back-links from those posts. What's the best too for that?

Spreadsheet would be good with your desired columns. It will be easier if you make different columns with the niche, PR, domain name of the website, etc. It will help you find a post faster.
