Number of Keywords in a WordPress Post

Hello All,

I am trying to get a simple and accurate answer about the number of keywords assigned to a post in WordPress. It seems there are a lot of different answers that are close to this subject but not dead on.

If you are using one of the many WordPress SEO Plugins (like All in One) what are the max number of keywords you should list in a post. Also, if you use tags should those tags for the post also be converted to keywords?

Any help would be appreciated.

Best is 1 primary keyword per page. But you can also try 1 primary with mix of 1-2 secondary keyword.

As long as your keywords are in the Title tag and the description tag, as well as the H tags you use (h1, h2, etc) that will be fine. You don't even need the exact keywords in the H tags, as long as they contain words that are clearly related to the primary keyword.

Tags and keywords are different things in WordPress. Keywords are meant to give the search engines a clue as to what your article is about (although the search engines use them very little now, if at all) whereas tags are part of WordPress' filing system, and link closely related articles together.

Tags are important for both the search engines and your readers because, used properly, they should enable both to find their way around your site more easily.

Thanks for the answers and they are good ones.

I understand the difference between tags and keywords and that tags are helpful for on-site navigation. The reason I asked about tags being keywords is because All In One SEO has a default setting that states "Use Tags for META Keywords" and the default is YES. I always turn it off or set it to NO but was curious. I have seen sites that don't turn it off and end up with 50 keywords for a page or post.

Personally, I use keywords as many as possible as long as they looks natural.

Whats the need to stuff in as many keywords as possible? Not only it looks messy but also it fails to give results to the accurate and relevant ones.

It all comes down to this...

If you are using all in one SEO, use just about 1 - 4 keywords. 1 major keyword and about 2 - 3 LSI (secondary keywords)

Now... focus your site on the primary keyword only and make sure you get high quality ranking on Google.

Then create about 2 - 3 posts and focus each on one of those secondary keywords you use in all in one seo plugin, target it, optimize it, backlink the crap out of it and make you get high quality ranking for each of them.

Then install SEO Power (get it at SEOPower - Your FREE Wordpress Plugin to Dominate Google!, it's free) and wait for 3 days then check the dashboard and you will see a bunch of other keywords that your site is already ranking for naturally on Google.

Pick those that your site is already #1 for on Google then create a post to target and optimize for them (you don't even need a backlink for these ones) then publish them and in few days, you will be feeling the magic, most times, you get #1 rankings on Google for these keywords.

For your overall site, install SEOQuake firefox add-on to check your overall keyword density, keep it at 4 - 7%

For each of those posts you make, use SEO Pressor plugin and keep the keyword density for each within 1 - 4%

So, you get the whole idea now, right?
