Black Hat is mainly using tools to mass spam your backlinks all over the web in an un-ethical fashion in an effort to gain rankings. It is against the terms of all search engines and your site can get banned by doing it. It is essentially attempting to trick the search engines.

So "the Big G" likes it when you write an article yourself, manually post it to 20 different article directories, and include a keyword-optimized anchor text pointing back to your site?

Just because I happen to take a software that spins my article and then I use another software to blast it out to 1,000 directories doesn't mean I'm doing anything "worse" than you in the eyes of Google.

Technically, ANY sort of link that you build to your own site is against the rules of Google. It doesn't matter if you write the best article in the world or think of the most well thought-out blog comment and leave it on someone's blog. As soon as you link back to your site, you are doing what Google doesn't want you to because it's not a "natural link".

Oh so tools are bad to use, but if I manually write 10,000 articles and post them to 10,000 different directories all by hand, that's OK? Or if I go and manually comment on 5,000 different blogs and leave a link on each one pointing to my site, that's OK too?

Whatever, once you guys stop bein so scared of using tools and start building links with the big boys, maybe your sites will actually hit the top of the search engines.

I'll say it one last time. The only way to be a true white hat SEO is to NEVER build a link to your own site. You must sit back and wait until someone comes along and finds your site interesting enough to link to it on their own site. Then, after 10 years of waiting like this, you might end up ranking on page 1.

Black Hat SEO is defined as techniques that are used to achieve higher search rankings in an unethical manner. The black hat SEO techniques often include one or more of the following characteristics:
    • breaks search engine rules and regulations
    • creates a poor user experience directly because of the black hat SEO techniques utilized on the Web site
    • unethically presents content in a different visual or non-visual way to search engine spiders and search engine users.

Black hat SEO, as you may have already guessed (assuming you read the part about white hat SEO) is the evil brother. It is slick, talks a fast game, and can get you on the top ten lists for a while, but your website, and ultimately you, may end up paying a very high price for letting the evil brother be your guide. Going back tot he food reference, you can think of white hat SEO as the fat infused fast food, or the sugary treat full of high fructose corn syrup--it tastes so good and makes you crave more of it. Unfortunately, the goodness comes at a cost, which can be a debilitating and even life-threatening illness in the case of your body, and a penalized or banned website in the case of, well, your website.

This is what all of us do. True white hat SEO is simply creating good content and hoping people link to it. Manual backlink creation goes against this. So I'd say we're all a little grey hat.

    Hi,

black hat seo techniques are related to those strategies that are "unmoral" or a bit "unethical".. very often they can bring excellent results in terms of positioning our site on the top of search engines .. but to be honest.. I don´t recommend to come around them since Google hates websites using this sort of techniques and the penalties use to be pretty considerable.. for example.. moving your site down on its ranking or what´s even worse.. prevent your site from appearing in google for ever.

So just go thru white hat seo strategies.. if applied properly.. they can bring you the same results as the black hat ones.

I hope you find my explanation constructive...

    Cheers mate,

According to Brad Callen there are no Black Hat and White Hat methods!

However SEO companies use Black Hat methods frequently. And I think when we are talking about link building campaigns for our or our client's webpage we are talking about Black Hat method.

Building backlinks for won webpage is Black Hat SEO!

    Any doubt??

You people that are scared off by "black hat" tactics are hilarious to me. Sure, there is a chance that your site might get hit with a penalty. This is why you have to diversify your site portfolio. If you are putting all your eggs in one basket you are making a big mistake in my opinion.

Also, the black hat guys are on the cutting edge of SEO techniques. I hear stuff from my friends about what factors are affecting rankings, and maybe months down the road I'll hear about it from some industry blog like SEOmoz and they think they are breaking huge news. Sorry, but it's been known by the black hatters for months already!

but, in fact, you can still get banned even if you dont do anything at all. it's just less likely
