Does the first page of your website necessarily have to be SEO packed with 100 articles and what-not? Personally I prefer to have a nice hype-design with an "enter here" I just don't want to affect my SERPS.

  • Each article needs to be on its own page, not the homepage and there are several reasons.

Each page has a set of keywords that it can rank for.
Each URL can be SEO'd for maximum SEO
Each title tag can be SEO'd to it's keywords
Each Meta description can be written to rab the searchers attention and be more relevant.

That being said, a little content on the homepage never hurt.

No I wouldn't have hundreds of articles on a home page. I usually have one article on my home page which is optimized for the main keywords of my site. The article may be a general article on the niche or an introductory type article introducing the site and a brief outline of the niche. Just optimize the home page for your main keywords.

  • I think you're referring to a 'splash page'. Sure, they look pretty, but unless it's there for a reason, the click-through rate isn't so high because a) they typically take so long to load because they are graphic-intensive, and b) some people don't like clicking even that 1 extra time.

If it's all graphic, you'll have a hard time ranking that particular page, obviously, but if the rest of your site is optimized, it shouldn't really matter.

Thanks. I've got to make sure that it isn't to image heavy.
