Off page SEO is mostly about backlinks.

There are 3 things you must consider when building backlinks to your site:

1. Link diversity

When you have backlinks coming from web 2.0 properties, blogs posts, article directories, video sharing sites, press releases, directories, forums and other different types of web properties, you have link diversity.

2. Anchor text diversity

Vary the anchor text of your backlinks by using the other keywords you are targeting on your site or some LSI keywords in a 4:1 ratio

3. Link velocity

Link velocity refers to the speed and consistency at which you build your backlinks, build your links as evenly as possible over a period of time.

These are the basics of link building (off page SEO)

I will begin with the definition first : Off page SEO is the process you do outsite your website in order to rank your main site. What I recommend you to do is to make some social media campaigns for your site (social networking, social bookmarking, press releases distribution). To give a little bit of diversity you can also do blog comments, article distribution etc.

These 3 factors just mean that you should have links to your site that are coming from different types of websites and that the anchor text (<a href="http://www.yoursite.com/">your keyword</a>) should not be the same in every link and that you shouldn't build 300 links today and 0 for the next couple of months. You should build your links as evenly as possible over a period of time.

In a nut shell:

I highly recommend picking up a copy of Terry Kyle's Backlink Hydra. This will give you a great foundation and some strategies for backlinking.

The most important thing is to great a diverse backlink portfolio, so that when Google does an algo shift, you are always covered.

Agreed. That is great that you got On-Page SEO down - as it is the foundation for SEO. But yeah, once you have your on-page seo perfectly optimized, your rankings will skyrocket with some good backlinks. Look for edu and gov links first.
