Newbie Question about Backlinks

Ok, so I know backlinks are extremely important for SEO and helping get ranked. So my questions are:

1. Which is better, a few quality backlinks or hundreds of random backlinks?
2. Will getting too many backlinks too fast get you in trouble with Google?

I know there are many services that offer tons of backlinks for cheap, but it's one of those "too good to be true" things to me.

    1. i'd go for a few quality backlinks. depends on how you defind 'quality' and 'random' if by random, you mean spamming then i wouldn't do that. but getting quality backlinks with time and doing it manually is the best and pays off the most.

    2. too many backlinks to fast will raise red flags and prompt search engines you're spamming and you might have problems with google.

    don't go for any service offering backlinks, trust me. unless you want to learn an extra lesson from the good stuff you're already learning from here.

      yet exactly... The fast back link building services usually come from crap sites that have nothing to do with your site theme. Site theme matching is exceptionally important.

      If the link is not from a relevant site Google is likely to not count it at all and then you waste that money.

      As was mentioned a few quality back links from relevant sites is what you need. The rest is up to you and how your site performs after people arrive on your site. You do need to keep back links coming in but in the future you can back off a little as long as your site is performing well for users.

      Back links are like invitations to your site. If the back link invitation is not accurate in the person lands on a site that has nothing to do with what they are looking for that will be a negative thing. If the back link IS relevant then logically the person will find what they're looking for and will have a higher rate of success

        Thank you both! That was exactly what my thought processes were on that! I just see so much advertising for "Fast Backlinking Services!" and people saying, "Wow! That helped me so much!"...It just seemed too good to be true...and you know what they say about things that are too good to be true...

        Just like with a business, you have to make connections (backlinks). It's better to actually talk to someone and get a good reference, then just to collect business cards and cold-call.

          Can you back this up with facts or references?? I'm really trying to figure out the differences in quality backlinks and bought backlinks. :confused:

            the except below is taking from Google's SEO guide.



            in this context "extreme" would mean getting too many backlinks in an unreasonable pace (spamming). this fact alone is enough for you to get convinced that quality, manually, natural backlinking is the best option.

          Then what is the truth if relevant back links are not?

          Especially since Matt Cutts has reiterated and reinforced that over the years.

          Dropping off one line statements without explanation doesn't help your point... but you haven't made a point other than to say something is not true and leaving it at a dead-end.
