Beating .edu and .gov sites

I've been doing some keyword research and noticed that for some keywords, the entire first page was populated with .edu's. Although traffic travis ranked the competition as relatively easy (few backlinks and not on-page optimized) I'm wondering if it takes into account factors such as .edu or .gov sites.

Are .edu or .gov sites harder to beat even if they have less SEO going for them? Anyone have any personal experience with this?

YES linking to edu and gov sites would be taken into consideration because it significantly boosts rankings in the search engines as Google love authority sites.

I think it would be more difficult to beat gov websites compared with .com websites as I think Google give more weightage to edu websites

During my site promotion I have seen hundreds of time that EDU sites even with very few backlinks are higher ranked in google than a .com site with 1000s of backlinks.

I have personal experience with this.
Yes, it's a fact that it's a lot harder to beat .edu or .gov.
Sometimes it's even impossible I guess.
