Newbie Question

I always hear backlinks. However, I can't find a post anywhere about "backlinks" and what it does. From my understanding, it's submitting your site to directories, web 2.0, pings, etc? If that's the case, does anyone have any other sites that I can submit my page to? Assuming that's what backlinks are? All I see when I search backlinks are people offering product after product. I was wondering if someone can teach me for free as I'm just a beginner, and I'm not planning to invest money until I make my first pay check. Thank you!

Backlinks are normal (hyper)links to your site/page placed on other's sites/pages...

More backlinks you have is the better.
More *good* quality backlinks you have (contextual to your site, with your keywords anchor-text, placed on trusted and relevant websites, placed on high pagerank sites) is the better.

You can manually build your own backlinks writing and distributing content with backlinks to your site in it.
    You can buy backlinks.
You can hope that other people naturally fit backlinks to your site.

Backlinks is one of the most important factors about off-page optimization.
