So I basicaly would write an article, publish it via ezinearticles and do some heavy link building....what do you think,do I have a chance to rank for a term that has 100,000 competitors(in quotes)?

also the first site in the search engine results is a 1 year old blog with nearly 700 backlinks. And they are not top quality links at all.

Ezinearticles has a good repute and PR. Because of a tough criteria to evaluate an article to be published in their directory, it is in good books of google. If ezinearticles allows your article with backlinks to your site, Google will definitly honor your site. To raise your position in google, you should use all white hat sources for backlinks. For example, articles, forum postings, blog posting, social bookmarking etc.

Trying to rank an EZA is not cost effective. You are sending
traffic to EZA, giving them a potential adsense click away
from your article, as well as clicking on the dozens of other
links to other articles they also put there. These pages
are created on the fly and are not static.

I would never waste my time sending traffic to EZA. That
defeats the whole purpose of an article on EZA. Let EZA get
their own traffic. I spend 100% of my time sending traffic to
        my sites.

Are ezinearticles good for competitive keywords? Shoot, they're
barely(not?) worth it for non-competitive keywords.

Maybe it's me? That doesn't make any sense wanting to rank an external site you don't own.

Why would you want to do that, why not rank your own page?

I have one site already but it isn't in this particular niche and that doesn't help me much.

You have to buy a domain if you want to use EZA to market products too. They don't allow affiliate links in the resource box. You'll have to at least buy a .info for a dollar and redirect it if you want to just link to affiliate programs.

also the first site in the search engine results is a 1 year old blog with nearly 700 backlinks. And they are not top quality links at all.

The number of sites that come up when you search for your keyword phrase in quotes is meaningless. There are 10 spots on page one of the search engines and those 10 sites are your competition. I would argue that the top 5 are your true competition because if you can't rank in the top 5 you will only get a tiny percentage of the traffic coming to your site.

A keyword phrase could come up with a million results when you search in quotes but if the 10 sites on page one are poorly optimized you could rank easily. At the same time you may search for a term in quotes and only find 10,000 results but if the 10 sites on page one are well optimized you'll have a hell of a time beating them.

To gauge the difficulty of a ranking for a keyword phrase you need to look at the 10 sites on page one. What is their PR? How old is their domain? Do they have the keyword phrase in their title, url, and description? How many backlinks do they have?

These are the kinds of things you need to look at to determine the difficulty of ranking for a particular keyword. I wish it was as easy as putting your term in quotes and looking for some arbitrary number of results but unfortunately there is more to it than that.

EZA should be a tool to promote your site - one among many. I don't suggest spending much time building links to your EZA articles. Instead, you should post the content first on your website and then outsource some article submission services (you can find some people willing to submit to 200+ directories on Fiverr) for massive backlinks and traffic.
