You get what you pay for with hosting. I would say at least go with the smallest package on hostgator.

I hope that you have more of a plan than just buying a domain and web hosting though.

I would not do it on a free hosting site, as it doesn't look as professional, you may have ads to contend with, and what happens if the site ever gets taken down. I also don't know if it will rank as well. I personally also use and like Hostgator. I have the account that allows me to have many add-on domains with one monthly hosting fee (is that the Baby plan?). However, I buy my domain names at Namecheap.com. There, you have to pay once/year for the domain name and if you want, you can also purchase Whois privacy protection in bundles for when you have a number of sites that you want to protect.

I would suggest you avoid these free hosts with spammy names like 000webhosting.com. Many of them are under some kind of blacklist by Google because they host many warez and adult sites, so if even if you have a good site, it will be tough to rank for anything. Many free hosts are considered bad neighborhoods.

You should get your own domain and host at Blogger.com by pointing the nameservers at Blogspot DNS. I have a site running on Blogger but with my own domain name. That is 100% free hosting for you.

Although Blogger used to host a lot of spam as well, but Google owns it, and they regularly delete sites that they don't want. So nothing to fear if you plan on running a legitimate site.

Yes, Hostgator could be a good one.

Also 1&1 or Lunarpages...anyway I don't suggest a free hosting plan for SEO:
      1. There are too many domains on the same IP often
      2. downtime could be an issue

      Just my 2 cents...

You should definitely buy your own domain, instead of using a free one!

As soon as you learn a bit about internet marketing, you will realize that any website you create is an investment, which can be built into an asset worth anywhere from $10 to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

You wouldn't like someone else having the ability to pull the plug in it anytime they chose!

    Cheers

Honestly, if this is too much I'd think twice about what you're getting yourself into. You're always gonna have to spend something to make an income online - more than $5 anyway.
i know, but iam in learning process.
