I hear this term alot, can someone explain please.

    Ahh well let me give you a short answer. It's a method for exchanging content from you to another.

    So you get to write blog posts to someone else's blog and thus making you a guest blogger.

    For what purpose? Traffic, links etc.

    So there.

      Down side is it that takes allot of time to negotiate with the bloggers and set up the swaps.

    Guest blogging is really effective and a good method if you have the right person & audience. The guest blogs that I have seen write similar to what the original author's topic. But its also great to have different topics mixed in with your blog.

    Guest Blogging is also a great way to get 100% original content for your blog. http://myblogguest.com is a great place to hook up right away with places to post and get excellent content. Just increasing your post frequency by a couple posts a week will improve your traffic and ranking.

    Because your links are spread across different domains in an actually natural way its great for your link profile.

    I run guest blogging campaigns for a few of my clients and the traffic and ranking improvement are clear and documented. After working it a while they are on PR 6 to 8 sites that are well known and nearly anyone would know of.

    The better the writing the better results you will get. To get on high PR well known sites you have to build up some posting history to show them and they usually have very specific guidelines. Some sites I had to send 3-4 article idea pitches but to place my links on a PR 6 site getting 140K /month traffic is totally worth the work. If I add up all the traffic per month on all the blogs one of my clients is on it is approaching 2 million a month. They are #1 for 18 key industry terms, not that there are not other factors, but guest blogging had a lot to do with this result.
