I have a question about a website ranking in google for a specific keyword. The keyword is "cartoon yourself" The website ranking number one is Cartoon Yourself Free

My question is. How is this website beating befunky.com which is a PR6 domain with 48000 backlinks to domain and cartoonyourself is a pr 0 with 59 backlinks to domain non of which are edu or gov?

Well, first get rid of the idea that .gov and .edu have any superior value to .com or any other domain extension. It is unfortunate that this rumor is still circulating (I find myself explaining it almost daily).

All domain extensions are equal and .gov or.edu extensions are no exception. Anytime you are trying to separate solid theory from Internet rumor just take a look at what makes sense for the End-User. yourself is the quickest and easiest example. When you go looking for something on a personal basis ( I mean personal like you are shopping for something and has nothing to do with Seo ). when you find a website that you like, do you care what the domain extension is? if you saw that a domain was not a .gov or .edu would you leave the site .. even if it appealed to you? I think you get the point.

This .gov .edu value rumor is about eight years old and I am pretty disappointed to see that it is still in circulation.

Having done your research you can now see my point. You could have 100,000 .gov or.edu domains linking to you. But if your website has nothing to do with government or education is not relevant. And the same goes for the other way around as you are clearly seeing.

It does not really matter how many back links a site has. When it comes to particular keyword rankings( the subject of your post ). if the inbound links are not relevant to the keyword: they do not count.

For example. If you are cartoon site exhibits a cartoon theme throughout your entire domain: you will be seen as a cartoon themed domain.

If you get 100,000 inbound links from women's hair salons: they will not count. They will not help your ranking for the word "cartoon" . even if they put the word "cartoon " in their link anchors to your site: it will not count: it will not boost your ranking for the word "cartoon" .

What will get you ranked for the word "cartoon" is inbound links from other sites that are "cartoon" themed or in some way relevant to the keywords you are trying to rank for. This is not to say that you can only rank for those keywords. Many sites rank for multiple sub themes. However when it comes to highly targeted keyword phrases, you need to have substantial content and inbound links that are - relevant - to the keyword you are seeking to rank for.

Without even looking at it I'm going to assume that they're using solid anchor text, a page that is heavily optimized for that keyword, and high quality backlinks. Also, new domains tend to get a temporary boost in the SE's, only to drop pretty quickly.

That said, it's time to fire up SEO Spyglass.

Because of the domain name which exactly matches with the keyword. On site factors are very few but search gives them more importance than all off site factors. Link Popularity now only carries 18% weight in the ranking factors and it is also now impossible to create some sort of Google Bomb. The main factors of rankings are your online presence, user feedback and the on site seo.

It is not meant that if only we have .gov or .edu backlinks the site could ranks in number 1 in search engines.

But if you compared the two websites. you can notice clearly that the keyword itself is present in that website URL. Have you noticed. Also if you check for cartoonyourselffree.com they have used that keyword in the title tag, meta description, meta keywords and content.

Rather you cant see the same in befunky.com.

Check clearly in search engines you will be noting the exact reason.

    Thanks
