Depends upon how the cloud is populating. I know Joomla is PHP-based, so if the cloud is executing through that, you'll get the full linking value from the cloud.

However, if the cloud populates with JavaScript, the links you see are rendering after the browser (and search engine crawlers) hit the page.

Check the source code of that widget. If the links look normal, you're getting full value. If they look odd, and are embedded in <script> tags, then you're probably getting reduced-to-no value.

Yes tag cloud's are very beneficial, coz they attracts the viewer and viewer. And each viewer tends to check out element in that.

Tag clouds can help in the way described (not sure about randhawa though) Just as long as there are not too many words and links involved. If there are you migh dilute the value of the links that are important and it could become spammy.

Tag cloud is one way of adding or filling keywords in ur site.Every time bot comes to ur site, it will crawl to that tag cloud also. So it is useful in seo.

Personally I've found tag clouds to be bad for a websites, it's good to get the bounce rate down but from my experience google doesn't like it

My cloud have more than 100 tags, this causes Traffic Travis software to display a warning across all pages, the warning says : "The page has over than 100 links" , it is known that Google bots not following too many links in a specified page

So if the tag cloud is necessary, it may be useful to create a new page and put the tag cloud in it instead of the sidebar to avoid the above issue

That would just be dumb. Then you have a single page with nothing but links.

        Just nofollow the tags.

First of all not all tag cloud code is plain html. If the tag cloud is javacript, it depends on how it's coded If Google will even see the links.

The easiest way to tell If your tag cloud is SEO friendly, as far as hyperlinks actually being seen by Google, is to check the Google Cache (text version).

Personally I don't like any tag clouds, there just annoying to look at IMO.

Tag clouds are a good way to connect almost every page on your website to almost every other page, and to connect the more popular pages more often. This is an easy way to do "pretty good SEO." If you structure your links intelligently then a tag cloud will just mess up your structure, but if you don't want to bother and want to get 85% there then go ahead and throw a tag cloud on your sidebar.

Connecting all the pages on a site is a bad idea IMO.

Keeping the internal links focused on the exact subject/category will help with SEO more than random internal links.
