Optimizing for One Word

I have a website where I am #1 in a competetive niche (two keywords). However, I want to concentrate on a single keyword now and I see that I am at # 43 - not too far away.

I have never concentrated on a single keyword niche, but since I have a very good website that has a lot of info on it - I think I have a chance of getting to the first page over time. However, my plan of action is that I will be having someone write a lot of additional information for me and I will optimize the pages and place them on the site. I will be doing some backlinking as well as a little bit of social networking.

My question is this. Has anyone have experience concentrating on a one keyword niche? Also - I will be facing giants on the first page like wikipedia. Is there anyway I can beat them over time?

And one more question (I know - I have a lot of questions): How should I optimize the pages? Presently, my index page has a few links to the internal pages (anchor text of course) as well as internal pages cross-linking each other. However, someone was telling me that I should concentrate on writing a lot of internal pages that link back to the index page. Are they right about this?

How did you get to #43 for the single keyword? Probably by building quality backlinks. Just keep doing that, and you will get there over time. It will be hard, because as you said you are going up against "giants" like wikipedia.

Well - How I think I'm at #43 now is because I have a lot of quality information. I'm ranked #1 (on first page) for my two KW phrase - but if I get to #1 with the one KW (part of the two KW phrase), I'll rake in between 30 to 80 times more traffic for this one website.

I have someone writing a lot of my pages for me (very good writer w/ a lot of great unique content) - so I'm wondering if I should link back to the home page from these new pages (with anchor texts within the body of the text) to give the index page more juice. Does that make sense or maybe I'm off here...
