PR vs Number of backlinks

Hey,

I have recently gotten into promoting physical products and i have been doing a lot of research on them. I have keywords that i can easily rank for but the problem is this.

I will find a good product like Maytag refridgerator 3050302 for example.

I will then look at google and find that the top ranking sites are maytags main site, with like a pr 1-5 and then amazon sometimes with a pr of 1-3. Which makes sense, but then they each have about 2-10 backlinks to that page.

So would i be able to outrank them if i had all my on page seo correct and built a consistant 20 backlinks a day for that keyword? I checked this everytime, and the next 50 results all have 2-10 backlinks, so none of these pages have any links to them.

So my question is pretty much to people with expirience with this, can i outrank these high prs with no backlinks if i create about 20 a day? or will I not be able to?

Im going to post a picture of the rankings of the top 10 results under this post to show you what im talking about.

      do not become obsessed with PR you waste a lot of time. Additionally do not become obsessed with counting your back links by using Yahoo site Explorer or reviewing the Google cache of your inbound links. Even though you can see who is linking to you you cannot tell how much value Google is assigning to each link.

      It is unlikely that you'll outrank Amazon unless you produce a site almost exclusively dedicated to your target. The reason for this is because of the amount of time spent on each website that is outrank you. You cannot overpower them with back links alone.

      For example: even if you have a site with 10,000 back links, if people do not like your site Google knows that. When people type in a search Google obviously knows that part. Additionally Google knows what sites you visited after executing the search. By recording the statistics of your visit to sites after you have run a specific search Google can determine how much you liked the site by how much time you spent on it and if you returned to it etc.

      So the bottom line is even if you get enough back links it's still not enough to overtake websites that outrank you by user opinion( visitation , time spent on site , return visits to sites )

The reason few people talk about site performance is because they don't want to face the amount of work it takes to build a site that really captures and audiences attention: just like you are trying to do now by attempting to overpower them with back links and PR.

        You are very wise. Thanks for this post. I find most of SEO to be common sense, but I never knew they actually took site performance into consideration when ranking against the "giants" in your niche.

        Forum posting is the best.
        You can also do blog commenting or article submission, they both work well.

    Quality backlinks are more important that pr. But strength of the backlinks depends upon the quality , not quantity...

    Google likes contextual links. Forum and blog commenting are not as heavily weighted but you do want link diversity so it looks natural to Google...I would suggest linkbuilding in a variety of ways.

    The OP asks about beating the top sites by building X amount of links per day but I agree with NastyBlast, you need to look at performance. I actually obsess over my stats on Google Analytics more than I do Google Webmaster Tools. Why? Because G Analytics tells me what the visitor does once he reaches my website and that is priceless. I can improve my website hence my visitor's experience by concentrating on the website itself rather than links. If you have a site that converts well (whether that's just signing up for a newsletter or making a sale), then other sites will start naturally linking to you too.

    These sites have good PR and rank well just for one reason and that is domain age. Start basic SEO like using keywords in title and H1 tag and well optimize your site before starting off page, as you mentioned these sites have just 2 to 10 backlinks so you can outrank them, it may take time but can be achieve by normal SEO efforts.

      Hi i have the same question, only maybe worded a little differently.... I'm just gonna give the exact details....

      I want to rank for the phrase "how to stop puppy biting" .... when i type it into google the page rank of the first three sites is
      1st - pr 3
      2nd -pr 1
      3rd - pr 4

      After using seo spyglass i can see that the pr 3 and the pr 4 sites have only used the term i want to rank for a few times, while most of their other backlinks to that page are for other non related phrases such as dog training or just their domain name as anchor text.

      So my question is, if the top spot has only between 5 and 10 low (n/a value) backlinks with the anchor text of the phrase i wish to use, and say i get 50 n/a value backlinks with just that anchor text, would i be able to outrank them?!

      I know other factors come into play too, but i have an 8 year old domain myself, including the keyword puppy, and my onsite seo is far better than all three of theirs?

      I'm guessing/hoping it can be outranked, since both sites in both first and second position has outranked a pr 4 in third position, but i really hope somebody can answer this?! :confused:

    One way I get quality links is through "ping back". I have written a few blog posts and linked to other prominent blogs which send them "pings" that they then approve as comments.
    This approval sends a ping back back to my site as a link.

    If you are referencing a particular site in your content, you might be able to get a couple of good ping backs that will help with ranking
