Measuring different results

I have recently conducted a few different SEO moves and I am having trouble isolating my actions for their success to try to determine what is actually working and what is not.
I bought two Fiverr gigs one on the 16th and one on the 17th. On the 16th I noticed a good spike in my search engine traffic, but do backlinks effect rankings that quickly? The only link that has showed up on Yahoo Site Explorer is one from the 17th gig.
I'd also been doing some manual backlinking on blogs but nothing extensive.
Any insights?
