The harder I work, the further it drops

I've been working on SEO for a client's website since November now. It's beginning to feel like the more optimized content I put on the site, the futher their page ranking for their keywords drops. According to Market Samauri, the site that I am working with has the following info:

Age: 12 years
PR: 2
IC: 142
Magestic Backlinks: almost 4,000
And the keyword is everywhere except the domain name

It's currently number 10 for one of our top keywords. (down from #5 in November)

Yet in the number 1 position is a site with the following info:
Age: (too new to measure)
PR: 0
IC: 36
Magestic backlinks: (0 to the home page, 66 to the domain)

Can anyone explain what I'm missing? I've been adding blog content with a 1.5 - 3% keyword density. Yet it feels like they go down for each post I place. I would realllly appreciate anyone's input.

The website is: abbeyspring .com

Thank you!

What is your search term? I'm going to assume Bottleless Water Cooler?

I wanted to look at the other SERP results to get a better understanding.

Your site looks good, but your main looks more like a sales splash with some images... I don't even know if that main page counts as content!!?!? Just joking it does... But very, very low word count.

bottleless water coolers Count: 8 Density: 2.21%
    iBottless

bottleless water coolers Count: 1 Density: 0.96%
    You

You need to be sure to build high quality, dofollow backlinks using the targeted keywords as anchor text.

You didn't mention anything about back links. You must build some with specific keywords. Also, your main page word density doesn't support your keyword. Change the density of the main page and you should rise.

Hi, thanks for the responses. Maybe I am on the right track. We have some copy written for the main page - with our keywords: Bottleless water cooler, bottleless water coolers. The owner has also agreed to get involved in social commenting/linking strategy. I'm just amazed that we've been going backward while working hard to move forward. (We're responsible for the blog at /blog and advising on the site which is maintained by someone else. just had a major overhaul of visual pluss added shopping cart. We used Foxy cart, and experienced a big drop in ranking for the product pages afterward. Maybe it's just too new?)

Also, we've been shooting for keyword density of 3% for our blog posts. I can't fight the feeling that we're getting dinged for going that high. Any experience out there?

your site might be affected by recent panda update of Google. Google is penalizing websites in USA for linking to content farms or using duplicate or low quality content on site.
I think you should review your SEO practices after reading about panda update and immediately stop all activities which are harming the ranking of your site.you can try updating fresh SEO content on your site too.

Quick question... all your on page tactics sound great but you haven't mentioned building links with your desired keywords in it, so are you?

The exact match domains are outranking you because they probably have 50 exact match backlinks to the site.

We have signed up for a backlink service. Also, the owner has agreed to start a comment campaign for backlinks. Do you have tactics that you recommend?

These are ideas that we have considered. However, the materials on the blog are unique. We don't link to link farms. As far as poor quality, I don't like the way that they read at 3% KWD, but I think they are of interest to people interested in pure drinking water. Also, the KWD of our closest competitor is 7% on the home page.

it could be your seo so hard on the site or some of your competitor is more heavy than you and they out rank you

Improve that onpage SEO for a start.

I recommend running it through Traffic Travis or something to check all the onpage content is good and you get a quality score.

Then the offpage. I am not sure how you are building those links for your client but remember to concentrate on quality rather than quantity and use keyword anchor text.

    Cheers,
    Dave

~~ I'm guessing you use the paid version. How does it compare to other tools like Market Samauri and SE Cockpit? ~~

^^ Kathleen, personally Market Samurai I've found is the best program for all of my SEO stuff. I use it for every single aspect of my site and have yet to find another program that does it as well.

And to the original poster, as everyone else has been saying, build HIGH QUALITY backlinks to your site from web 2.0 sites, that sort of thing. That's the best way to get the site back up and ranking.
