I have ranked many sites on page 1 of google using wordpress.

I just launched a site that ranked on page 1 within the first 2 weeks (pretty weak competition).

Now when I check my rankings google has started ranking my tag pages instead of my main inner pages for the keywords, and of course the tag pages rank like crap ( around position 100 for every tag page).

Not sure why google is doing this as I have many other sites built the same way and google never ranks those tag pages.

Should I no index these pages or is this just a temporary dance? The site is less than 1 month oold.

Just build links to the pages you want to rank in Google SERPs, no need to noindex a tag.

More pages in the SERPs the better.

I rank all my WP pages/post/categories/tags, use unique canonical tags per page & zero problems...

Personally, I prefer to have either category pages indexed, or tag pages indexed; never both. However, in your situation, it would not appear that the tag pages are providing any sort of benefit to you, or the potential person who might find them.

I prefer to cut down on all of the fluff that gets indexed from my sites (privacy pages, date-based archives, customized tag pages, etc) because in some cases, it has lead to duplicate content issues that have resulted in my tag pages, etc ranking crappy and in place of my main SEO pages for the same keyword.

There are plenty of plug-ins that you can utilize to do this for you on an automated scale if you prefer to not have to deal with it manually. My preference is the Wordpress SEO plugin by Yoast; it has a very effective noindex/nofollow aspect to it that is highly customizable.

My vote here is for Yukon. I have read his advice many times and have never seen him give anyone bad advice. He is on top of his game.

It is always good idea to have tags.If your tag is indexed way before main page. Then it is because your main page has not enough backlinks.Create backlinks for main page.Don't doindex tags it is always useful.

I also noindex certain categories and index my tag pages - works for my layout and entry of posts.

  • Google does what Google wants to do.

The question you need to answer is "Does this effect my other pages".

Look at your Analytics... does it? If not then why change it?

The consensus seems to be there is no value in ranking these pages? Is there?

And who knows what Google will do next week to flip it all on it's ear.

That is the nature of SEO... figuring out what works, and when it stops working, figuring out what needs to be changed.
