How many keywords?

The obvious answer is 10,000,000+. In other words, the more the better.

For examples of how effective this can be just check out: wikipedia.org, about.com, ebay.com, youtube.com, amazon.com, ezinearticles.com.

Perhaps a more useful question would be "How many keywords for a page?" Which I would answer: 1 to 5 at the most.

You can target as many keywords as you like as long as the keywords are relevant to the content on the page and overall theme of the site.

I usually say 3 at most, however, it depends on the competition and how hard they are to beat. I have a couple of sites that rank number 1 in Google for highly competitive keyword phrases and I pretty much just concentrate on that one keyword for those sites. Other sites that are targeted to longer tail, or less competitive, keyword phrases I focus on 2 or 3 keyword phrases.

I think there is a limit on keywords. I heard that you'll be penalized whenever you go over the limit. Don't know exactly if its true

It depends on how much you are spending and the keyword traffic estimates.

If you have $200 you don't want to have 10k keywords...the key is to start with phrases that are 3+ words and build a core list of highly relevant keywords.

Keep each page laser focused and then bunch pages together in themed categories.

In general it is good to focus on 2-3 keywords per PAGE of your site.

I generally start with 1 primary and two secondary keywords.

Of course you can target more. But like the others who have commented on this discussion, I would not recommend that you target more than 5 keywords per page as it makes it too difficult to properly optimize the page.

What I like to do is focus on what I call 'composite' keywords which are keyphrases that actually incorporate several keywords. For example: The keyphrase 'online marketing techniques' actually targets three keyword combinations - online marketing techniques (of course), online marketing AND marketing techniques. Of course, this is also what is referred to as a long tail keyword because you will find that most long tail keywords incorporate several combinations.

Note that I said 2-3 keywords per page of your site. Ultimately you will want your site to rank for many more keywords. Which is the reason that other pages of your site will target other keywords. Just place an article (or content) on other pages that targets other keywords. Ultimately, if you have a site containing 50 pages you can be targetting 150 keywords or more for the entire site. And once you have visitors come to the site then there is a chance that they will browse the site... no matter what page they happened to enter via. Oddly enough, I've had visitors to my site who have arrived via my sitemap! How's that for weird?

If you're doing PPC, start with small targeted keywords, usually not exceeding 100.

However, let's not forget that our posts should be made for humans. Search engines can only help, but it's still humans like us who will read them.

The keyword per page depends upon the amount of text you have on the particular page.

If you have an average amount of text then 3-5% of keyword stuffing is standard and if you have a good amount of keyword then keyword stuffing of 3 to 7% would be standard......

I agree with TKO, your keyword list is like a net you cast out to sea..how much fish do you want to catch? PPC you can pay a premium price if your campaign is profitable then you can adjust to pay more if not profitable or just starting out.. 100 keywords per adgroup tops tight keyword. Or on text like masetero says 3-5% or one keyword per 100 words will do nicely
