Are there any FREE keyword tools out there that give information worth having? I've downloaded a few "free" ones and they blur out all the important information. A simple "High Competition" would suffice, and I only have a handful of keywords I want to check only once.

Try the Google keyword tool (just google it.) It gives the searches and shows you an idea of the competition, but not exact numbers.

If you use it, go to the left side of the page under "match type" and uncheck broad and check exact.

    Google keywords tool.

And high competition differs depending on niche and your ranking approach.
However for me that's normally higher than 50,000 competing pages for exact match.

It is a challange finding accurate "Competition" data. Most free tools only use old style methods like phrase match resuklts/all in title etc to estimate competition.

Quite frankly these methods are outdated and you need to assess the top ten results for your keyword. That's your competition - The first page of Google serch results.

Try downloading Market Samurai it has a free trial. Use the seo competition module to get an accurate view of the competition

I would download the Market Samurai trial definitely - even after the trial is over you can still have access to some of the features for free.

Yea without a doubt. I built an entire course around using this tool. It is without a doubt one of the most powerful tools on the market. I think if I am not mistaken you can download the software for a free trial, and keep the keyword module for free, so that should help you out.

The GAKT's 'Competition' column is just for AdWords, not necessarily organic rankings.

    Thanks guys,

Market Samurai is awesome. I just downloaded it and it gave me so much more detail than I was hoping for. Very useful software.

I'm trying to rank for the keyword "Open Mics." It's a very common word, but sites don't generally optimize for it, as there's no money real in it. So the search yielded lots of results, but I doubt anyone below the top 5 matter...

Google results for [Open Mics] = 1,070,000

Here's what Market Samurai had to say... I still don't know if this is good or bad though.

Here i sharing best suggestion for how to decide keywords compeditor. There is no exact rule for this. But, just an opinion, 40 daily searches minimum or 1,200 per month would be comfortable for beginners. Anywhere between 30K-50K competitors may be the max. 100K competitors would be serious keywords for us.

Google keyword tool seems to do just great. Even though everyone says it is only estimating adsense. You still get a pretty good picture of what is going on with the keyword. Doesn't have to be down to the exact number. Also, google the keyword.....see what comes up.

What about trying trial versions of paid services? As I know Market Samurai really awesome for this, also you can try Semrush. Then make research with google adwords, analyse results, and choose appropriate keyword.
