Links from web directories and article directories probably still carry a decent amount of weight as there is some regulation/review process there.

Yes but you have to be careful with forum posting ; Insert your signature after 5 -10 posts and at least 7 days from signing up.

Getting contextual links from good resources work great! Try to get backlinks from article directories, squidoo lens, weebly and also by doing guest blogging. Forum posting is another good way. Actually it's always better to get backlinks from several sources.

If you have an SEO program, you can search for all types of blogs, directories, etc in your niche.

There is no need to label one "the best." They are all vital and important in your battle to rank highly in the search engines.

So use a combination of these, use anchor text with your keyword a decent % of the time, and let the rankings work themselves out.

IMO there's two levels (with some overlap) of backlinks, but both are needed.

  1) Bulk, low-quality, low-relevancy (this is where you get most of your links from)
  Blog/Site Submission Directories

  Forums

  Blog Commenting

  Social Site Profiles

  etc..

  2) High-quality, high-relevancy (these are harder, but provide the super-punch)
  Guest Blogging in Relevant Industry

  Link-baiting from High-Authority Sites

  Copying Competitor Links

  Paid Links (Yes they Work!)

  [ 1 ] Thanks

Link exchange has always been a favorite way to get website backlinks. There are sites specifically built for link exchange, but don’t go for them. Instead, look for other websites that have content that is similar to yours and exchange links with them.
