Being one linkbuilder I suggest you below the step by step offpage activities that help you increase backlink as well as keyword ranking improvement

1. Directory submission: do as many as directory submission. Although it is not so high impact on boost on ranking, but it will help you increase inbould link
2. Socialbookmarking: Do social bookmarking for get link as well as promotion of your website
3. Article submission: It is highly impacted offpage activities. Submit article to high traffic and high PR article directory and linkback to your site on the resource box. You can get relevant incontent link from article submission.
4. Guest post: Search for relevant blog and email to the blog owner for guest post on their blog. This is another good offpage startegy.
5. Forum: Join relevant forum and contribute your idea on the forum thread. Get link from the signature.
6. Blog comment: Well this is also very good strategy if you get dofollow link from commenting. But maximum of blog provide nofollow link on the comment.

Think of Google like a human being. If you get like 20 or more backlinks everyday, Google will come to know that something is fishy and your site won't rank high. Rather lower!

There has been some great points mentioned here, but I don't think anyone will have time to do all these things properly on any one project. Some of it may have to be outsourced.

Something I always encourage people to do is to find a strategy or training course they like and trust, and follow it! Without a step by step path to follow, it is very easy to get sidetracked and distracted, which will slow the whole process down!

What would you say is your mix? For example, do you focus more on certain channels than others (e.g. forums vs. directory submissions). I'm the lone ranger SEO at my company, with an ever-growing client base...so time is a premium. I completely understand the importance of link diversity, but with time constraints, which link-building channels provides the best results for a one-person SEO?
