Hi guys, originally I was going to do a PPC campaign, but decided to limit that drastically because of the cost. I am wanting to do more SEO for my business and am wondering how do you test when doing SEO? Do you put a temporary PPC campaign? What about testing one against another and making changes. Thanks guys!

  • You've made a wise choice. SEO is much more work; but it is definitely worth it. I usually focus my attention on ranking keywords that get a lot of monthly traffic. Where there is traffic, there is money, even if your sales page isn't the best.

Use Google Analytics and use the goal settings to test the conversion of visitors on your site. You will create goals and Google will give you a code to put on conversion page. You will be able to see the seo keywords that converted and also see adwords campaign conversion rate.

Google Analytics is a great tool. There are less powerful tools that should come as part of the package of whatever hosting system you have. It may take a few months, but you'll see a big difference. In six months to a year, my website experienced an explosion of activity that it hadn't had for years prior. A combination of a number of things, no doubt, but of which SEO was a critical aspect.

Start by getting your onsite optimization as rock solid as you can. Look beyond the generic H1, title, alt tag recommendations you typically hear (of course these are important) and work in some of the other stuff like internal linking structure, XML sitemap, Google Webmaster tools, etc. Solid basics.

From here I would just start building backlinks...which is another animal and building content.

You should have a solid reference, from your PPC, of what keywords to target, as well as info from Google Analytics, as already stated.
