I want to start a site with a url that is a general keyword phrase and then add more specific keyword pages as the site grows, the keywords are low competition. I have read that it is quite a bit more difficult to rank pages for a keyword phrase if it is not in the url. Should I be worried? Thank you.

No...the exact domain and the subpages of a website always have a difference. Its easy to rank for a keyword with the exact domain and hard for ranking pages of a website unless ur site is an authority site.
