    Alexa is a toolbar that sits inside your browser and lets you know the ranking of the websites that you visit. It ranks the websites according to their traffic.
    There is a slant to this ranking system and not everybody can participate. Only the users who have alexa toolbar installed are allowed.

    It's a system for ranking all the websites on the Internet - with number 1 being the most popular (in terms of visitors) up really high numbers (I've see a few sites in the 10,000,000s!).

    The data is collected through the Alexa tool bar - so it's more of an estimate really. You could say it ranks sites by popularity among people with the Alexa tool bar installed.

    Compete.com and Quantcast provide similar data.

      It is true that you discussed here whereas high page rank tells site's authority and low alexa rank tells popularity between the users.

    Alexa Ranking is a determination that is made based on traffic. That means that sites that see less traffic are bound to have a substantially lower ranking. There is a slant to this ranking system, though and it is that not everybody can participate. Only users who have the Alexa Toolbar installed can participate. There are some other select toolbars that can be installed through Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer that can participate, as well but the main method of tracking is through this Alexa Toolbar.

      Nope, Alexa is just an estimate of how much traffic a blog gets. In no way alexa rank helps to improve SERP rankings.
