Keyword density refers to the onpage text within a website. The "keyword density" specifies what the site is trying to rank for, and how many times it is used vs. the amount of words used on a specific page.

Typically you want to stay around the 3% mark to avoid having the search engines flagging it as too much.

There are several tools out there that I use to help calculate this. What type of site are you creating?

Percentage of keywords in total keywords on site
Keyword Density = ([Keyword Count]*100)/(Total Word Count]
lets say that you have a 500 word article about website design, and you are optimizing for “website design”

    Total Word Count: 500
    "website design" keyword uses: 12

    “website design” density = (12*100)/500

Keyword density for “website design” on the page is 2.4%

Keyword density is a combination of the number of times a keyword or a keyword phrase, in proportion with other words, appears on a Web page. The more times the keyword appears in relation to the total number of on page words, the greater the overall keyword density. The more times that other words appear, the lower the proportion of keywords, resulting in a lighter keyword density.

Keyword density is or can be a part of your on-page SEO efforts. As already explained it just means how big a percentage of your content your keyword is.

It seems that everyone has a different opinion about what your keyword density should be, and some people believe it is totally irrelevant.

I don't think, that a good keyword density will get you much better search enginge rankings, if that's all you focus on, but if you do a good joob with your on-page SEO (keyword density among other things), you will see a better result from your off-page SEO efforts (backlinking etc.)

If you build your pages in wordpress, there's a good plugin called SEOpressor, that can help you optimize your pages and posts in the best way possible.

If you don't have the budget, here's a very thorough and free SEO guide for beginners: seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo (sorry, not allowed to post links yet).
