I thought we might all benefit from a brainstorming session on local industries that benefit from seo. This might already have been done and if it has, apologies. I would also like for us to list which industries we've had actual success with in terms of actually getting companies to buy into your local SEO. Let's split it into two categories: "Proven" and "Hypothetical". Proven will be your results and Hypothetical will be your entrepreneurial ideas or other success stories you've heard from others.

Remember, this is subjective. Just because someone hasn't had success in a certain industry but you have doesn't mean this is an opportunity to boost your ego by flaunting it in their face. This is just a tool so that we can all help each other out. Also, I just started local seo so I don't have any customers as of yet.

Proven:

None

Hypothetical:

roofer
plumber
handyman
electrician
portable generators
computer repair (home)
pain relief center
accountants
hair dressers
tanning salons
insurance

The hypothetical list for this is going to be a mile long isn't it. Can you not just add any name for any profession or industry or type of work to it? Hypothetically everything is local to somewhere.

      Not really.
You're looking for people that earn a decent amount per transaction.

A hairdresser isn't going to be able to justify spending a lot of cash on SEO, because it'd take that business owner a long time to make that money back.

Centres of influence are excellent clients, because they generally pass on referrals. These are people who work with a small amount of clients for high fees:

      Lawyers,
      Accountants,
      Real Estate Agents.

The other category of interest are those who serve a high volume of people for a fairly high price. Interestingly, this includes most skilled crafts and home improvement people.

Doctors (dentists, optometrists tend to be especially popular)
Plumbers, electricians, roofers, most people involved in the renovation process
      Mechanics

Retail locations can fall under and of the four categories
(I'm trying to be concise here, but the other two categories are low volume low cost per transaction and high volume low cost per transaction).

      Best practiced industries then.

I currently do local SEO for a roofer, three construction contractors, a dentist, smog stations, a lawyer, personal fitness trainer, a night club, a water park, a DJ, and a pool company. I think that covers all of them.

I agree with the poster than you should find businesses that have a high rate of return. I have a salon website owner wanting SEO, but I'm trying to steer them to just try some simple(and cheap) social marketing. I'd feel bad charging them for SEO when it's not really going to give them an ROI.
