I am doing SEO for a hot rental destination. When I look at the keyword competition through the Adwords Keyword Tool, it says that the city itself has less competition for it than the city plus "rentals". For instance, "Johnsonville" has less competition than "Johnsonville Condos".

Asking strictly based on keyword competition, not on strategy or anything else, would I rank quicker on "Johnsonville" than "Johnsonville Condos"?

I doubt it. We have that same issue for a client in the real estate world.

    1) They convert GREAT for the city name alone, and there is very little PPC competition.
    2) Unfortunately, the competition is just as stiff (if not more competitive) because you are typically in competition with even higher authority sites - local chambers of commerce, city hall, etc.

    It's possible though.
