What Does RSS Really Do & Seo Importance

Have a new website that I am just starting to add content to it in the blog section, it is real estate related.
Have never really used rss and don't understand them and if there are multiple uses for them, so what is the pros/cons or importance of them for seo purposes.
I am looking into backlinks, can they be helpful with backlinks if so how or sending traffic even if i am not ranking no where within 2000 pages...
So if i am adding content every 3 days to my blog do i need to get a rss submitter and when should i submit to rss feeder.
