Say you had a domain www.niceredshirtsonline.com and you bought the domain to optimize for nice red shirts. Obviously this domain would help rank for that keyword but would it be harder to rank for say, shirts because your domain has other words in it? I want to rank for nice red shirts so I bought niceredshirts.com but I dont want it to keep me stuck to only rank for nice red shirts if i want to rank for shirts, blue shirts etc..

Sorry if this is confusing, I just dont want to limit myself by having a keyword domain

What do you think wikipedia.org and amazon.com rank for?

What keywords do you think warriorforum.com ranks for?
      Kayak.com?

Getting back to earth, a real estate site would not need a domain
for each and every type of house or property. Likewise, kayak.com
does not rank for kayaks. Actually, dickssportinggoods ranks #1
for kayaks. Footlocker.com ranks for nike shoes, not necessarily
      foot and/or locker.

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.

That is true but they also have a large marketing budget and a brand name. As for me, I do not. So, my next best bet would be a a EMD or something close to exact match. I just don't want it to hurt me for my other keywords

It is all about the competition on the first page of google. Your domain that you gave as an example is not an EMD. It is a keyword rich domain. It does help and you can still rank for other keywords but it is not an end all be all type of deal. If you think you can outrank the top ten for you keyword it shouldnt matter what domain you get. it is all about on page seo and off page seo.

Ranking for a term like shirts would be a long-term thing - it would likely take you years. You have to take baby steps to get up to that, so shooting for lower hanging fruit initially is not a bad idea. Given your domain would have shirts in it, that will help for later on when trying to rank for shirts. Obviously having an EXACT match domain would help much more, but Shirts.com wouldn't be cheap enough to buy.

Get the rankings you can more easily get first, and treat that as the first steps towards the long-term goal of ranking for shirts.

Having a keyword rich domain is just one of many factors that will help your site rank. So the answer to your question is No, it will not make it harder to rank, especially if it's in the same niche. You will still be able to rank for blue shirts, pink shirts, etc. as long as you are optimizing your site correctly.

The keywords in a domain will definitely help a site's ranking; however, domain name is not the most important ranking factor. Rather, high quality, dofollow backlinks that use your keywords as anchor text are. Check out my signature for more info.
