Hi warriors,

I am a little confused. I used google keyword tool and found a phrase that supposedly gets 673k global searches a month but the site that is in #1 in Google for the keyword doesn't seem to be getting a lot of traffic from what I see in alexa and hasn't got much back links either.

I was thinking if that keyword is getting so many searches the site in the number one spot should have thousands of visitors per month.

Am I missing something?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Jouvan

are you searching the adwords tool keeping the "Phrase" term ticked or using the "Exact" match search??

Use exact match and then you will see the real results...

Make sure that its EXACT searches! I'm sure most of us have made that mistake once or twice and built a site around a term that had amazing Global search volume and had very little exact.

Even when it's exact, divide that number by 2 or 3. Google inflates their numbers big time.

Most sites that rank 1, don't get 100% CTR from google. You can look at anywhere from 25%-50% CTR from Google if ranking no 1.

Finally, Alexa relies on Toolbar stats, so it's not always accurate.

True - Alexa is an extremely poor indicator of traffic.

I have sites that have an Alexa of 500k+ that receive 1,000/uniques a day and I have websites with 50k-80k Alexa that receive 40-50/uniques a day.

Oh wow.. Thank you very much guys.

I ticked all 3 "EXACT" "phrase" and "Broad" they all had very different results. So I should focus on "EXACT"? if that is the case the traffic for that keyword will be s**t thank God I didn't loads of time optimising for that.

    Thank you all again.

Well, sometimes people get confused by that Tool.. but sometimes the tool is very accurate.

Example: one keywords says it has 4K per month in open search and 200 with EXACT search.

BUT... if you manage to create a site demolishing all the longtail keywords inside that big one, you'll be getting ALOT of traffic.

So much misconception about that tool - it hurts.

Generally speaking, if the higher level keyword you are looking for only has 200 exact searches a month. That's a poor keyword to go after, and potentially a poor niche. Building out 'longtail keywords' around a parent keyword with only 200 exact searches a month is not a method to get a LOT of traffic.

      Re-read what I said:

If you encounter a market with 638K OPEN searches like OP said, with LOW competition, just because the tool says it ONLY has 200 exact searches per month... you better stick with it.

What the tool is telling you is there a huge amount of people looking for something 100% related to that keyword, ie: longtail keywords.

In fact, if the tool shows 600K OPEN searches and ONLY 200 exact, thats the same then telling you: check long tail ones.

      But who cares.
