What is Google doing?

I finally started seeing my site appear in the top ten pages about a week ago when typing in my target keyword into Google. I know that the top 1-3 positions of page one is where it needs to be, but it was a glimmer of hope for me. (The site is about 5 months old)

It was on page 10 the one day, then it had moved to page nine the next day, and then slipped back to 10 the following day. I was thinking about outsourcing some more backlinks for it and recently purchased another 100 links.

I did not check for a few days, but last night, I decided to have a look again and could not find it anywhere in the top 20 or so pages. I have just had a look again and I have found it back on page 41 The strange thing is that individual pages of my site are appearing higher up the ranking (page 15 is the highest), and even my privacy policy is on page 32.

Can anyone explain what is going on:confused:

(I have to go out now, so I will not be able to respond to any replies, but I will check back later on)

Cheers

What's happening is that Google is trying to figure out where to place your website in its index. This process can take a few weeks and you'll see it bounce around ALOT. The same thing happens when you start to build links to it if you've had the domain indexed for a long time. Google has to re-evaluate the site and re-file it according to it's algorithm. You'll also see your website across different servers/data centers. All of the data in Google's index is shared across LOTS of servers, and one day you may be accessing the server in, say, Washington, and then tomorrow you search for your site, and you'll get results from the server in Oregon. Don't worry though, they will all sync eventually. The key to getting all of the data centers to share the same information is to build backlinks because this will allow Googlebot THAT many more chances to update and re-sync its datacenters. Hope that wasn't too long-winded and technical.

No idea, but it ain't good.

Usually I'd have about 5,500 visits this time of day (noon). I currently have 500. Google says they want high-quality articles, but I am getting out ranked by crappy websites that only posts 200 word excerpts pulled random blogs around the interweb.

Whatever they are doing, they are doing it wrong.

So you had a blog getting like 10,000 uniques/day and never built a list, social following, etc to diversify the traffic? It sucks that your traffic fell off by 90%, but it seems crazy to have a site that popular and not still rely so heavily on Google for traffic.

My bad! I didn't use twitter, didn't use facebook, didn't have an email opt in (and didn't have time to learn aweber), and I wouldn't trust my staff with that operation.

I only have about 2k emails from past giveaways that I got from manufactures...

So yup, my site was dependent on Google. I thought if I followed the rules, Google wouldn't punish me.

I have, for the first time ever, been hit by ranking drops across almost all of my 25 or so sites. On a couple the No1 ranking pages are there, but everything else virtually, has seen a drop of between 6 places to hundreds of places. My earnings on adsense had been up this month, sitting around $140 ish per day, but today, Saturday, a bad day for me anyway historically, I'm only on $15 with 10.5 hours to go. Would expect to see 80-90 dollars today. Traffic is at around 200 impressions, should be 5-600 by now.

All content is original and at least 500 words, well SEO'd. Some pages have Amazon only, still hit.

No warnings in WMT or anything. I really hope this is a temporary thing, I make my whole living from this!! Time to diversify!
