For some reason only the first part of my keyword is ranking well.

My keyword is 10 words long, (yes 10) and the first 8 are currently ranking my website #2 in Google

As soon as I add the last two words on to complete the keyword, it's ranking my website on the 6th page

Why would 2 words make such a difference?

    Interesting question.

There are a number of variables in this scenario. Nonetheless, my best answer to your question is that Google doesn't always act as expected. If we could 100% predict what Google would do with our keywords and sites, then SEO would be a relatively easy game (not that it's necessarily hard all the time by any means).

I have question for you. How many searches do the two different keywords get?

skateboard vs skateboards have a different SERP.

The short answer is because it is a different keyword. As a separate keyword is goes through the same analysis as every other, it has it's separate keyword density, and it's separate anchored backlinks.

    so it ranks differently

More than likely because there's more people with the exact phrase "How To Make A Blank Blank Blank Blank For You"

If not, then... beats me :/
