Quick question...

Hypothetically, if I got links for 'keyword.com' would it indirectly help with my SERP for 'keyword.com/article1?

And vica vera, if I got links for 'keyword.com/article1' would it indirectly help with my SERP for 'keyword.com?

Cheers

Yes especially if the keywords on both pages are related. Once you get some pages ranked on a site adding and ranking for additional related keywords and pages gets easier.

That is why I have never really understood the whole ranking a site for one or two keywords thing. I like to find a nice group of keywords to build a site around, works much better in my opinion and lets you use those keywords that are overlooked because by themselves are really not worth doing. Put 6-10 of them together on a site though and you can make some money.

I'd like to agree here. Putting a group of carefully chosen complimentary keywords together can increase your exposure and your odds of success.

    Yes, it can help.

But keep in mind the level of competition on whatever the REAL keywords are that you are referring to will be a big factor. In some cases, it might be relatively easy to get that "indirect link juice" to help you out. In more competitive cases, you mind find yourself getting no indirect results.

But having said that, I have done link building that makes use of this indirect approach to get results across multiple keywords, and it has worked for me.

I would also add -- make sure your links focus on the more competitive keyword you want to leverage, and don't waste the juice on the lesser keyword unless you really want it for a specific reason.

    Hope that helps!
