Backlinking period. You need backlinks going to your site to prove to the search engines that your site is relevant to the search term.

Don't worry about submitting your site to the search engines - if it's worth finding, they'll find it...

The bottom line is that in SEO you need backlinks and hoards of them. This is something that accumulates over time through creative marketing, link bait, effective offsite SEO tactics and a lot of diligence on your part.

There are lots of WSO's for newbies with linkbuilding, I'd suggest you probably spend some time there. But don't get carried away with spending money and realize now that SEO is NOT a short term venture. SEO is a long term process and it can take months to achieve decent rankings.

Ya don't bother submitting your site to the search engines. The search engine technology is advancing and the time it takes them to index a new site or page is diminishing.

This is the key to search engine optimization that many people forget. They get so caught up in the methods to dominate the result pages, but they don't consider the why.

The search engines have one goal: To deliver high-quality, relevant content to the searcher. If you can provide that, you'll rank higher. If people find your site and linger, and even return, you'll do just fine. If people share your stuff on Twitter, Facebook, Digg and other social networking platforms, you'll do fine.

Instead of focusing on all the intricacies of ranking, focus on creating high-quality, relevant content that your target audience will find useful. That's how you dominate the search engines, even the social search engines. Of course, meta-tags help. But it's content that rules, never forget that.

Make sure your pages are full of great content, submit articles to directories, send out press releases and make sure it's all of the best quality. And study the competition so that you can bring that level of quality and more.

But even without article submissions and search engine submissions. If your content is worth sharing, you'll have no problem dominating your niche.

Backlinking definitely is your answer. But this is not a small subject!

There are many forms of creating backlinks and no backlinking campaign is equal. You will need to create a good backlinking portfolio in order to rank in competitive niches.

Jesse is right you need back links. Also Read this. I believe this should answer your question. Ultimately keywords in your h1 tag, meta and etc, submitting to directories and making you page Authority all plays the role in getting you found in search engines. Hope this helps.

I'd go one further than the backlinks comment.....INDEXED backlinks. If youre backlinks aren't getting indexed they won't count in Googles eyes.

This is the key to good ranking and where I was going wrong for a long time until I realized it.

Have relevant content in your site that is Search Engine friend using keyword that that are strong and have less competition, Also theme your articles with related keyword.
