Lets say the keyword im trying to rank for is "restaurant boston". When doing a analyze on my site with SEO books keyword density analyze tool (or do you recommend some other tool?) it looks like this:

boston 17 words, density: 3.91%
restaurant 13 words, density: 2,99%

but under 2 word phrases it says:
restaurant boston 0,92%

So what is my real keyword density according to Google?

Cheers

I don't think anyone can give a definitive answer as to which calculation Google uses for determining keyword density.

Bottom line, is that I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just make sure you don't have an excessive percentage of your keyword phrase in your article.

How many times is your keyphrase on the page and are you using it in the title, is it bolded at all, close to the top, etc?

Less than 1% seems a bit low but it does depend on how much content you have and how you are using the phrase as that is as or more important than the percentage.

I have ranked some of my 2.0s with spun but readable content on easy keywords. These 2.0s are manually opened and consist of about 4 to 5 pages and posts together.

With no additional backlinking done, these 2.0s normally went to top 5 in SERPs. Guess What? Keyword density I applied were about 1.6% - 2%.

I am talking about very very easy keywords with less than 10k competition and ~ 200 searches (exact). The results have shown me that keyword density within the 1.6% to 2% have been much more effective than those with ~1% with these 2.0 properties.

    Hope this helps,
    Haruka

It is hard to say and I find each niche is slightly different. You definitely want both of those words towards the top and also as a pair. but not over 4%.
