longtail strategy for information site?

I'm working on a site that when finished will probably have about 50 pages. I don't want to invest a lot of money into SEO because this website is mostly an information site and the CPC is low. Its just a project of mine, but I still want the site to get as much traffic as possible.

As of now I'm not ranking well for any of my main keywords (I only have like 30 backlinks ) and practically all my traffic is from long tail phrases. Should I consider changing what keywords I'm targeting? It seems like I would get much more traffic if i was ranked 1st for a phrase that gets 500 searches a month than if I'm on the 3rd page for a phrase that gets 4000 searches a month.

If I do end up doing this, will it be a problem to try to change back to my main keywords? Like if one day when I have a significant amount of backlinks and traffic to change my title and h1 tags and all that? Thanks guys!

    Hi icosane,

You seem to be asking if you should perform keyword research for the purpose choosing which keywords would be best to target? Answer: Hell yeah!

Since your research is for an established website, you want to look for long tail keyword phrases that contain your primary keyword as a root. As you optimize your promotional efforts for those long tail keywords you are simultaneously optimizing for the primary keyword contained within the long tail keyword phrase.

As you accumulate 1st page rankings for those types of long tail phrases your will see your primary targeted keyword climb in SERP ranking. Eventually you may be able to push your listing onto the 1st page of SERP for that primary keyword. You will find there is synergy created by this strategy.

Am I wrong in thinking that a page titled "Keyword" ranks better for the keyword than a page titled "Keyword Longtail Phrase" ????

I went through and made titles, urls, and h1 tags all keywords that I hoped to rank well for. Most get between 1,000 and 8,000 global exact searches a month. Google analytics though is telling me all my organic traffic is coming from searches for longtail phrases. So should I just rename my titles and urls and h1 tags to the longtail phrases that get like 500 searches a month?

      Thanks gurus.
