The Real Panda Meets Grandma

Much to my surprise, there is a real Panda.

His name is Navneet Panda and his work created the Panda update.

Like Page Rank was named after Larry Page, the Panda update was named after Navneet.

His goal is to get Google to use artificial intelligence to evaluate every site on the Internet.

What's the criteria for evaluating your site?

I'm about to share that with you.

Around 18 months ago, Google PPC introduced a new factor into their evaluation of sites. This was done manually.

The question they asked was:

Would we be happy if our grandmother purchased something from this site?

If the answer was no, the site was forbidden to advertise on AdWords.

Now, they are not only applying the Grandma criteria to paid advertising but also to every site online.

Panda's job is to teach Google how to identify these sites without manual intervention.

Your site needs to be "Grandma Friendly".

Long sales letters? Not grandma friendly.

Websites with high bounce rates? Not grandma friendly.

Websites with thin content? Not grandma friendly.

Websites with scraped content? Fuh get about it.

What Google has decided is that the Internet needs a shake out.

It's time to remove the crap.

It happened in Google PPC.

It's happening in YouTube.

And it's happening now in Google organic SEO.

So the response is not: how can I trick Google?

The response should be:

How Can I Keep Grandma Happy?

Think about your Grandma and what she would want to see happen online.

Have a happy 4th of July.

Peace,

Harlan

So Lady Gaga can pretty much kiss her Google presence good-bye then?

    That seems weird...

Harlan, I don't know if you have an official source about those criteria but I guess you summarized the situation very well.

Honestly, don't you all think it is time for everyone to have a better internet? To find what you are looking for easier than before and to enjoy what you found from your search...

It is certain that the majority of the internet is full of crap and up to now Google haven't been doing a great job separating quality content (which is what we are actually looking for when we do a search) from crappy content.

Google had to do something about this in order to survive as the #1 search engine in the world and made some serious moves in the last years including the final Panda update.

I am glad to see such moves from Google as it will help all of us in the long term. Firstly, we will have a much cleaner internet where we will find what we are exactly looking for easily. Secondly, the quality of the internet will improve as the ones who continuously supply crappy content will be knocked out and they will not be our competition any more. And finally, we will have to create much more quality content to make our readers happy so that Google will keep sending us traffic. And with better content, I am sure our earnings will improve as well.

    What do you think?

Nail, everything I said here is public information. The AdWords info came from insider information but by now, that's generally known.

As a copywriter, I'm going to miss the long form salesletters.

But I understand what they mean by Grandma friendly.

I hope it means a better Internet.

So it looks like Adsense will be shutting down any site with a good CTR, sounds kinda counterproductive for Google don't ya think? After all the Goal for Adsense is to convert traffic into clicks...

Looks like your confused what bounce rate is.

        [source]
        Bounce rate
A “bounce” is when someone comes to your website and then leaves without visiting any other pages on your site.
An Adsense click is not an internal page...

My point is, If the high bounce rate is because of a high Adsense CTR, that's a good thing. Otherwise what's the point in having Adsense at all?

    Weird.

You think grandma would be happy with a World of Warcraft eBook, or a book about making money? Do most grandmas care about that stuff?

If you are talking about the way the content is set-up, like how easy it is to read and stuff, that makes a lot more sense. But, as for products, they all have different targets.
