Articles, Farmer update, Where to go?

I'm new to the seo world but just as fast I found that article submission would be a good tactic for seo, I also found that hmmmm... well farmer update. Ezine, after researching plenty, looks like it was one of the hardest hit from that update. It, along with many, were also a popular place to put articles (obviously for nofollow backlinks). But here is the question, if all my articles are "unique", are not "scrapped", or "copied", Do they help my links on these sites? And where do I find out if google is "penalizing" still these sites?

    One tip that can help you for long time: protect and develop YOUR interests - not everyone's interests.

    That said, focus on YOUR unique content, YOUR internal linking strategy and YOUR web satellites to bring power to YOUR money site(s).

    Keep it small and strong.

    Farmer updated messed up a lot of what all the "gurus" were saying.

    My recommendation is keep doing article marketing. Get unique content created, get it distributed, and have a link to your site. Try and change the anchor text around, and not have all the links to the home page.

    The get more content created and have it put on your site. Don't distribute the content you put on your site. Keep it 100% unique and have that be the only place where its found online.
