I use googles FREE Keyword Tool.

Search it up on "google keyword tool"

The best way to use this is like this.
You want to have HIGH SEARCHES but LOW COMPETITION

the way to do that is by using a long tail word or phrase : eg.

"new york steaks"------------(short tailed) High Competition
"new york city top steaks"----(long tailed) Low Competition

to check your competition just use "the quotation marks in your keyword" on googles search engine, if it has lower than 70,000 or less you are good.

OP: I use MS' Rank Tracker, but that's a rather expensive tool.

Search Mike's Marketing Tool in Google..You can check your current ranking, although there are gaps sometimes in the results.
