What have you experienced with 301 redirecting a medium-established site to a brand new domain in regards to the "Google Dance"?

I have a site dancing around right now that has a 301 redirect from a site that was previously on page one for a popular keyword. It showed up on page one briefly, but now is many, many pages back. Very frustrating. I have been employing a very solid and steady backlink campaign on the site for the last month and am very surprised to see it dancing this much. Both the previous site and the new site are very well optimized for the new keyword and are full of high quality, original content.

Thoughts?

I've actually been intrested in this method lately. I will bookmark this thread. Honestly google profit storm forums. There's a guy there by the name of PJS. Check in the backlinking section. Thats mostly how he gets his sites ranked. He would probably have a good idea. He does mention the criteria of the domain to be at least Min 3 years old, 500 backlinks from different domains, PR2+, domain authority of 35+. He says he experiences almost no google dance. Hope this helps.
