Low/Medium/High Competition Keyword?

I'm curious to find out what people here think qualifies for a low or high competition keyword.

I've always thought it was just by how many search results come up for a particular Google search. That's what certain black hat SEO tools go by. I can't remember what number they were assigning each level, but I remember for any keyword returning around 5 million search results it said not even to bother as it would be too difficult to rank for.

It seems sort of subjective to me though, as sometimes I see people stating that their keywords are very highly competitive and I don't think they are all at, and sometimes the opposite.

What do you think?
#competition #keyword #low or medium or high

You can try to use Google Adword Keyword Tool to determine the particular keyword local and international visits. This tool also shows you the competition of the keyword phrases.

That competition is for the AdWords bidding, not the competing pages.

I think it would be better to target medium or low competition keywords first. Competing against other large SEO with highly competitive keywords is quite difficult. Unlike in medium or low competitive keywords, which you can rank and compete with others well.

Same. Download it as a CSV/Excel file...it will give you a percentage of competition (saturation typically) there is in the market. You want to find low comp, high traffic, so pic the highest trafficked lowest competition keywords and focus on those. You will also pay less in ppc.

And technically the black hats are not wrong, they are basing it on the theory that if their are millions of people searching for Lady GaGa, then there are millions of websites wanting to be found for Lady GaGa.
