Try out a variety of methods at a reasonable pace - that's very important. Guys in the answers above suggest very good methods. I would also add guest blogging - that's the whitest-hat method you can think about! As far as the pace is concerned, make sure you don't build tons of unnatural links all of a sudden. I mean it's cool if your post gets hundreds of retweets in a matter of hours - it's natural, but beware of many links of other types in a short run.

Anchor text is the keyword you are using.You need to build link using anchor text rather than raw urls.
Spinning is used to create number of different articles from the original articles use spinnerchief or TBS.
Submit to article directories and blog commenting is good.

Good backlinks should have a solid base. There are some backlinking strategies that allows you to enjoy temporary boost in serps, eg: blog commenting and profile linking (that too the sites should be of high PR and non-spammy). Article directory submission, forum links, directory submission and bookmarking can add the quantity of links but not the quality. Guest posting and link baiting are the two best ways to build a solid base for link building. Though this takes time, they add real value links.

I use a simple systematic approach by submitting a blog post to up to a dozen blogs, then create a couple of classified ads from the same information and also build a simple webpage.

All the blog post feed automatically into various forums providing multiple backlinks from the same information. Doing this every day creates a mass of backlinks pointing to my main sites which over time rise to tops positions. No special techniques required a child could do this
