Exact Match Keyword Numbers

What is considered a good number of exact match searches per month globally/locally for a specific keyword ?

I'm use GAKT and doing KW research for a swimming pool company. If I search for "custom swimming pools" using an exact match, the number of searches that it brings back is 480 local monthly searches. But, custom pools is their niche.

I'm very confused as to what is considered a good exact match number. I've heard 1,000 or above is great. Can someone clear this up ? Feel free to contact me on SKYPE.

I realize I should put this into context to help everyone help.

I'm doing some KW research for a pool company, and their niche is building custom pools and spas in west Florida (specifically Sarasota). The keywords I have down as my core terms include:
    • custom swimming pools
    • swimming pool builders
    • swimming pool construction
    • swimming pool contractors
    • swimming pool renovations
When I do a GKWT search, using [exact] settings, and locally set to the USA, the numbers it brings back are generally around 400-500 LOCAL monthly searches with high competition.

Even long tail keywords like "inground swimming pool contractors" only yields about 170 LOCAL monthly searches. Throw the geo-targeted area into that phrase and there' no data to bring back.

I've been at this for 4 days now and reading constantly about different methods and I've got to admit that I am very confused as to what is right and what is wrong.

    Any help is much appreciated.

I would forget search volume as a defining measurement when it comes to local search. The volumes will never be high. Just plug your keywords into Google search and analyze the top 3 results. That's your competition and beating them is all that matters. Research what backlink anchor text they are using, the quality and relevance of those links and where their best links are coming from so you can have a go at getting links from those same sites. Do that while optimizing Google places and you're good to go.
